Abstract
Background and Aim: Determination of the extent and severity of Iran’s casualties following ballistic missile attacks, during the 8-year Iraq -imposed war against IR Iran. Methods: The information gathered and assessed pertinent to Iraqi missile attacks on Iran's cities included the date and time of the attack, the number and type of missiles, the cities targeted, and the number of injured and martyred from missile strikes to the urban areas. Information for the purpose of this study was extracted from the Armed Forces database is based upon the reports of the Iranian military units during wartime. Results: During the eight-year imposed war (1980-1988), the Iraqi Army fired 533 ballistic missiles aimed at targets in Iran. Of these, 414 missiles (77.7%) landed in Iranian cities the explosion of which 2,312 Iranian citizens were martyred and 11,625 were injured. Three types of ballistic missiles were used in these attacks namely: Fargo 7, Scud B, Al Hussein (an upgraded Scud model). In the 27 cities in Iran targeted by missile attacks, the highest number of martyrs and injured was reported from Dezful and Tehran. Iraqi missile attacks continued for 2748 days. Conclusion: The results of our study indicate the need for more extensive studies on the psychological consequences of Iraqi missile attacks among the survivors in 27 cities of Iran.
